Java modularization gives great possibilities, solves lots of technical problems, and applies to everyone, but only a relatively small group of users actually needed to deeply understand the changes. It changed a lot, a great lot of things – but internally. Sure, Java 9 did bring one significant change, groundbreaking even – the Jigsaw Project. A new HTTP client, process API, minor diamond operator and try-with-resources improvements. Java 9 appeared 3 years later, in September 2017, and for a typical developer, it changed next to nothing. Lambdas, streams, functional programming, extensive API extensions – not to mention MetaSpace or G1 extensions. Java 8 provided lots of language features that made Java Developers want to switch from previous versions. Why is it, after more than 7 years, still the most commonly used version? There are many reasons for that. Java 8, which was released in March 2014, is currently used by 69% of programmers in their main application. The popularity of Java 8 – a little bit of history Let’s take a look at some of the features. The additions to this version will be mentioned later in the article when particular features of Java 8 and 17 are compared. The version number is 8u345-PERF-b31 and its full release notes can be found here. An Oracle Enterprise Performance Pack for Java 8 was released on July 19, 2022. It is also worth noting that Java 8 is still getting some expansions – though only for Oracle Java and its costly Java SE Subscription. What does Java 17 bring? How difficult will the migration be? Is it worth it? I’ll try to answer those questions in this article. It’s the new Long Term Support version, with Oracle Premier Support to last until September 2026 (at least). Especially since on September 14th, 2021, Java 17 was released. That means there’s a good reason to make the move to a new version. It doesn’t mean that it won’t receive any new updates, but Oracle’s effort put into maintaining it will likely be significantly smaller than it is right now. In March 2022 Java 8 lost its Oracle Premier Support. However, in December 2022 it was updated with new information regarding the Oracle Enterprise Performance Pack for Java 8. There are a few other minute variations between the whole milk vs. One cup of skim milk contains about 86 calories, for example, while a cup of whole milk provides 146 calories. While whole milk usually contains approximately 3.25 percent milk fat, skim varieties generally contain less than 0.5 percent.īecause fat is high in calories, there are fewer calories in skim milk than whole milk. Whole milk has not been altered or modified in any way, whereas other varieties like low-fat or skim milk are produced by removing a portion of fat from the milk. Skim milk powder, for instance, is produced by removing the water from skim milk, resulting in a product with a much longer shelf-life. Similar to other types of milk, skim milk can be found in several different forms. Because of its lower fat content, it is also much lower in calories, with just 58 percent of the amount of calories of whole milk in each cup. Skim milk, also called nonfat milk, is a type of milk that typically contains 0.5 percent milk fat. Meanwhile, low-fat and skim milk are each produced by removing a portion of the fat from whole milk, resulting in a final product that is lower in total fat and calories. Whole milk contains the highest amount of fat, with around 3.25 percent milk fat. Take a stroll down the dairy aisle of your local supermarket and you may notice that there are several types of milk available, each of which varies based on its respective fat content. Keep reading for a few of the top skim milk benefits and disadvantages, plus some simple recommendations for your next shopping trip. While it’s true that skim milk is low in fat and a great source of several nutrients, there are some drawbacks to consider with this dairy product, along with several reasons you may want to opt for whole milk instead. However, it has also become a controversial ingredient, with new studies emerging left and right discussing either why skim milk is bad or debating its potential impact on bone strength, heart health and more. Skim milk has been considered a classic breakfast staple for decades. That way, you’ll be able to hear what you’re streaming, almost like you would in the theater. Some projectors have built-in speakers, though we recommend going with a projector that can connect to an external speaker or sound system. Sound and Speaker Volume: The last thing you want while projecting your movie is hearing the projector’s fan over the speaker volume. Depending on the projector, you may need to adjust where you place it in your room or home theater to move it closer to a power source. This is also a great option if you want to watch videos in your living space, but don’t want to mount a TV on the wall.Ĭonnectivity: We’ve included a range of mini projectors in this guide, from wired models that require a power source, to wireless projectors that feature HDMI connections and Bluetooth connectivity. Floating shelves give you a bit of extra flexibility in your living space, letting you remove the shelf whenever you’re not using your projector. There are a handful of mountable projectors out there, but a quick, easy solution is to use a floating shelf that you can buy online at Amazon, Target, IKEA or Walmart. If a side table or bookshelf are too low to place the projector on, a wall mount or floating bookshelf might be your best bet. Mount: Where are you going to watch a movie or show with the projector? Think about where you’re going to put your projector, and make sure there’s a clear, unobstructed line from the projector to the wall or screen. Luckily, most of the mini projectors you can buy online are lightweight enough that you shouldn’t need to worry about it. Before you buy your mini projector - sometimes also referred to as a pico projector - make sure it can fit in your space, but also pay close attention to how much it weighs if you’re planning to use, say, a hanging shelf to support it. Size and Weight: Taking the mini projector’s size and weight into consideration is one of the most important shopping decisions to make. Moving away from the new moon, light advances across the lunar face, with this progress described as "waxing" by astronomers. This means that the side of the moon that is illuminated by the sun is completely turned away from Earth. The lunar eclipse occurs at 5 degrees 26 minutes Sagittarius. These phases are highlighted by the difference in the fraction of the moon’s surface facing Earth that is illuminated by the sun.ĭuring the new moon, Earth, the moon and the sun are all roughly in a straight line, with the moon sitting between our planet and its star. If you can avoid flying at the end of May/start of June, maybe do it! I will also say, I'm not a fan of flying around this eclipse! Sagittarius and Jupiter rule flight 3 days before, Saturn (a death planet) turns retrograde, and 3 days later, Mercury (a tech ruler) turns retrograde, and retrogrades throw things off. Jupiter is the planet of expansion, so we have to try to find some middle ground with everything so we don't go too far in any direction. Jupiter is the natural ruler of Sagittarius, so we may struggle a bit more with the Sagittarius energy, and can be really lazy and lackadaisical with it, or expand on it too much and go to extremes with everything. This lunar eclipse makes one aspect, a square (hard aspect, 3 signs away) to Jupiter, who is freshly in Pisces for this eclipse (starts May 13th). Higher education, publishing, public speaking, and teaching all fall under Sagittarius, so this can be a good eclipse to finish a course of study or something that you're teaching, putting your work out there in the public, doing marketing and advertising, and communicating in a broader way that connects with people emotionally. Save pushing boundaries for the limitations that truly need to be torn down, otherwise there may not be enough gas in the tank for the stuff that really matters and deserves the attention. The smarter thing to do is to find space within limitations, rather than ignoring responsibilities and being reckless. Again, we need to be smart about this, and not just do the Sag thing and run for the hills. Sagittarius rules space and freedom, so we may crave a lot more space and freedom than we've had. When riled up, take some moments to calm down before rushing into anything. But lunar eclipses tend to be highly emotional, so we may have a hard time being objective and logical, and instead jump to action without thinking things through or respecting others. Beliefs can be a great motivator when used productively, coupled with informed decisions and smart actions. This can be problematic if we're not being open, automatically jumping to conclusions, or taking dumb risks. We can fight for what we believe in passionately, and defend our beliefs whole-heartedly. Here comes the first eclipse for 2021! The lunar eclipse in Sagittarius can stimulate our beliefs in a big way. Opposition: 19 degrees 18 minutes - 23 degrees 18 minutes Scorpio Trine: 19 degrees 18 minutes - 23 degrees 18 minutes Virgo or Capricorn Square: 19 degrees 18 minutes - 23 degrees 18 minutes Leo or Aquarius Sextile: 19 degrees 18 minutes - 23 degrees 18 minutes Cancer or Pisces Aspects to this new moon are:Ĭonjunction: 19 degrees 18 minutes - 23 degrees 18 minutes Taurus The new moon occurs at 21 degrees 18 minutes Taurus. With Taurus, this may be financially, helping with stability/security, or through our values. This new moon is sextile (positive aspect, 2 signs away) transit (moving) Neptune in Pisces, and this can increase imagination, make us more compassionate, and we can do more to help others. Grounding can help with stability and security. We may be less drawn to chaos, and more focused on how we can keep calm and be more present. Stability and security is also ruled by Taurus, so we may work on trying to improve the stability and security of life as we go forward. Taurus is a money ruler, so there can be financial developments around this time, and we may focus on making important financial decisions or transactions, improving our financial approach, or stimulating finances in some way (can be good for second jobs, side gigs, and profitable hobbies). Inequities may be highlighted, and we can focus on changing that. Taurus governs our values and what we feel is worthy, so we can give more attention to what we value, try to live more accordingly, and can focus on new values that reflect who we're growing into or who we want to become. We have staying power, but we have to take the first step first! We want to be certain before we take action, and once we do move forward, we can see it through to the end no matter what. With a new moon in Taurus, we can slow things down and try to catch our breath, and we can benefit from taking our time. Overdriving the transmitter can cause multiple audio signals within the SSB passband, and cause unwanted interference to other ops. your transmitter must never be overdriven and it should have excellent opposite sideband suppression. The CW generated this way has a nearly ideal attack and decay time, controlled by the software modem. If fldigi is tracking and receiving a CW signal on the waterfall your transmitted signal will be exactly on the frequency of the other operator. The actual transmitted signal will be at the USB carrier + the audio frequency, or the LSB carrier - the audio frequency. The CW signal is completely generated in the software so it is possible to control many aspects of the CW signal. The transceiver should be operated in either USB (preferred) or LSB mode. Press the "*" again to return to back to the CW speed that you were previously using.įldigi generates CW by inserting a keyed tone at the current waterfall audio frequency. If during a QSO you needed to slow down to give the other op a better chance to copy what you are sending, just hit the "*" on the numeric keypad and the CW code will immediately switch to sending CW at the set default value (18 wpm in this example). As shown above the TxWPM is 30 and the default is 18. The "Default" control on the CW tab sets that default value. Numeric keypad "*" toggles between the selected TxWPM and a default WPM Numeric keypad "-" decreases the TxWPM by 1 Numeric keypad "+" increases the TxWPM by 1 The transmit encoder settings for WPM can also be adjusted with three hot keys: The Lower/Upper controls are in in 5 WPM increments. The resolution of the TxWPM slider is 1 WPM. "Lower" sets the lower limit of the slider and "Upper" sets the upper limit of the slider. To make the setting easier two additional controls are provided. The TxWPM sliding controller is used to set the transmit WPM. It can increase the probability of correctly identifying the text character under very noisy conditions. "SOM decoding" provides a fuzzy logic implementation to match the RX stream detected on-off sequence to a "best fit" character. The RxWPM control is an indicator and is not used for setting the operation of the CW decoder. You can control the attack and decay squelch parameters of the detector, slow - medium - fast, for both attack and decay. When tracking is enabled the tracking filter is reset every time the transmit WPM is adjusted.ĬW detection is basically an amplitude demodulator with an automatic threshold adjustment. The tracking range (+/- Hz around the TxWPM setting) can be set using the "Rx Trkg Rng" control. Enable Rx WPM tracking by enabling the check box "Enable Tx Trkg". Increasing the filter bandwidth might improve detection in that QRN environment.įldigi can track the incoming signal. A lot of impuse noise (static) can cause the filter to ring. Select "Matched" filter to optimize the filter width for the current transmit WPM setting. The FFT filter is optimum when receiving CW in a white noise environment. This is a very steep sided low pass filter. The CW decoder uses a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) filter implemented with a sin(x)/x impulse response. It is the digital equivalent of tuning an analog USB transceiver so that the carrier is exactly at the CW carrier frequency. The CW signals are converted to a baseband signal. During operation the Rx and Tx WPM settings are annunciated on the status bar in the two boxes next to the mode indicator. You can also open up the CW tab by first selecting CW as the operating mode and then clicking on the left-most item "CW" on the status bar at the bottom of the fldigi main window. You can open that tab by selecting the "Configure/Modems" menu item and the clicking on the Modems/CW tab. The operating controls for CW are found on the Config/CW tab. Fldigi can send and receive morse code from 5 wpm to 200 wpm. Johor Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Mohd Fared Mohd Khalid.
As FEMA processes orders through the supply chain we maintain close coordination with states to identify potential bidding conflicts. If a bidding conflict occurs, we work closely with the state or tribe to resolve it in a way that best serves their needs. Due the use of priority ratings in the Defense Production Act to reallocate critical resources, federal government requirements are put ahead of other orders so we can best assist areas most in need of supplies. The perception that FEMA is “out-bidding” states and others for supplies is incorrect.Under Defense Production Act authorities, FEMA may then compel a price gouger to sell PPE in its control to FEMA at prevailing market prices, not gouging prices. The Department of Justice (DOJ) has assembled a COVID-19 Hoarding and Price Gouging task force to identify cases of price gouging and may alert FEMA to some shipments and stockpiles of PPE.The situations below may also lead to incorrect assumptions of FEMA seizing or taking supplies: If a governor believes that this has happened to their supplies, it should be reported to the FEMA Region. If a hospital believes this has happened to them, it should be reported to the governor. FEMA is not seizing or taking personal protective equipment (PPE) from state or local governments, hospitals or anyone lawfully engaged in acquiring or distributing PPE. Scientific evidence shows that consistent and universal use of masks on public transportation systems and in transportation hubs will help protect Americans from COVID-19 and help to reduce the spread of COVID-19.įact: In 2020, there were misconceptions that FEMA was seizing medical supplies. Be sure and check before you travel. CDC recommends that people limit travel during the pandemic, and if people do travel, they should wear a mask when doing so. Major airlines and municipal transportation companies may have different requirements.

It may not be for you if you dislike the newfangled desktop environments that, according to some, try too hard to impress with flashy stuff and gloss while not really adding much in terms of utility. Unity is for you if you’re looking for a very sleek and cool looking desktop environment that is also well polished, fairly powerful, strongly integrated with system functions, and well supported. Unity is still quite different though, taking its own unique path. Both share a fairly minimalist and unobstructed desktop style with an overlay menu, referred to as the “shell”, providing powerful search and selection tools. Unity is a kind of variant on the concept advanced by GNOME3, but executed quite differently. But in time Unity became much more polished and powerful, becoming a respectable desktop environment in its own right. The main problem initially was that it was actually quite poor and unflexible compared to what we had with GNOME2 so it felt like a step back. When it first came out as a default UI for Ubuntu it was met with quite a lot of grumbling, and still remains somewhat controversial. Unity is a complete desktop environment developed by Canonical for Ubuntu to succeed GNOME2. They tend to be most complete, most integrated, most polished, and therefore tend to count among the flagships of the Linux world. I call these choices “mainstream” because they are the window managers and desktop environments that most often ship by default in the most popular Linux distributions, same ones that typically aim for ease of use, attractive appearance, and powerful features. Desktop Environments – The “Mainstream” Choices For example you might want an environment that is sleek and visually pleasant, well integrated, and offering many helpful features or your sole focus may be speed and simplicity, or you might simply want something that closely mimics what you’re already used to (such as Windows and OSX environments). Having a decent idea of what you’re looking for goes a long way towards choosing what’s right for you. Different people may be served by different things as everyone may have their own definition of what works for them and what gets in the way. Ideally you want the environment to serve you and be adapted to your needs and desires rather than getting in the way. The choice of a window manager or a desktop environment comes down to your preferences in terms of look and feel as well as your needs in terms of desired functionality and workflow. Here we cover both window managers and desktop environments as we’re focusing mainly on the end user experience. Deskop environments are a bit fuzzy to define, but you can think of them as window managers with various complementary components added. A deskop environment includes a window manager, but integrates it with a larger set of tools and processes that typically make it a smoother and richer experience. What we’re interested in is what it draws and how do we interact with it, and that’s where Window Managers, and more broadly Desktop Environments, come in.Ī Window Manager is what allows you to actually open, move, resize, dock or otherwise manipulate windows of an application using your mouse and keyboard, and they come in many varying forms. It does its job of drawing stuff and hopefully does it well. In Linux this is typically the X Windows system (Xorg or X11), and new ones are being developed (Wayland, Mir etc.). So what do you choose, and how best to choose? Before answering that, along with an overview of a number of representative choices, let’s just clarify what is it that makes up the user interface (or UI for short).Īt the foundation of it all is a software engine that enables the very display of graphical elements and the capability of controlling them with a mouse and keyboard. In fact the choice of a prefered user interface may play a significant part in the choice of a Linux distribution since the default desktop environment, including the window manager, panels, menus, and default apps, tend to get the most attention and polish through higher attention to detail, better integration, better support, and so on. In the world of Linux operating systems, as well as other open source UNIX based systems like FreeBSD or openSolaris, this capability is a given. The idea that you could just change the way your computer’s user interface looks like and behaves is pretty foreign to most people that typically use Windows or Apple’s OSX. Its name perfectly symbolizes the concept of water resistance and ruggedness. The Oyster was the quintessential Rolex watch before the advent of the Professional line, which in a way stole the limelight from it, and is made in many different configurations, both for men and ladies, ranging from 26 mm to 39 mm. The modern-day Oyster Perpetual line is the direct heir of the original Oyster of 1926, and so, it is the longest-running series of watches by the company. In time, what were known and used as “tool watches” surged to become a status symbol worldwide - and today the company enjoys its reputation of being the most well-known watch manufacturer of the world. The Commander, Jacques Piccard, confirmed that the watch survived the ordeal. A special model, the so-called DeepSea, was secured to the hull of the bathyscaphe Trieste, which reached the bottom of the Mariana trench, at 11.000 meters. This happened also with the changing date on the dial of the Datejust, in 1945, and the two timezones tracking of the GMT Master, in 1954.īut the main Rolex achievement was the creation of watches such as the Submariner, one of the first in the market to be water-resistant to the (back then) astonishing depth of 100 meters. In 1931, Rolex launched a self-winding watch with a central rotor that could freely rotate on its axis, charging the main spring, improving decisively the previous solutions implemented by other manufacturers.Īctually, most Rolex notable achievements were improvements over other companies’ achievements - but the company of the Crown just made them better. Most possibly, Rolex also invented then the concept of the “testimonial” in horology advertising, as it posted an ad in a newspaper to publicize the feat. The crossing lasted over 10 hours, during which time the watch remained in excellent condition. In 1926, it manufactured the first Oyster, featuring a water-resistant case, and the watch was worn in 1927 by a woman, a young British swimmer called Mercedes Gleitze, during her crossing of the English Channel. The company was the first to manufacture a personal watch that was so precise it earned the qualification of “chronometer”, in 1915: before that, this feat was only reserved to marine chronometers. Their first production was often sold to jewelers, who branded the watches as theirs, while the W&D brand was stamped inside the case back.īut the company grow fast, and became a respected watchmaker quite soon, specializing in several key fields: the chronometer certification the creation of water-resistant watches the evolution of the automatic movement, which until then was still rudimentary and the development of the antimagnetic capabilities of watches. The two founders of the watchmaker were brothers-in-law, and originally they just assembled watches: they imported movements from Switzerland (made by Hermann Aegler) and placed them inside cases made in the UK. Since 1960, the company has been owned by a private family trust, the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation. The company switched its name to Rolex in 1915 and was transferred to Geneva, Switzerland, in 1920. Rolex today is the most famous watchmaking company in the world - but despite its huge reputation, it is a very late newcomer to the horology field, having been founded in London in 1908 as Wilsdorf & Davis, by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis. If you haven’t ever heard about Rolex, then probably you are dead. |
